Coastal Habitat Observations

• Dunes
• Fresh Water Swamps
• Glacial Kettle Hole Ponds
• Salt Marshes
• Woodlands

Field Lessons Scheduled:

Late October | Early November | April | May

Costs: Varies with the number of students (no cost for teachers / 1/2 price for chaperones)

Duration: 3 to 4 hours on the train

Departing from: Buzzards Bay, Hyannis, or Sandwich Stations

Field lessons are aligned with Massachusetts state science frameworks.

Students discover answers to questions such as:

• Why are certain plants and/or animals found in one habitat and not in another?
• How do changes in the environment affect living organisms?

Field Ecology Train Allows:

• Observation of different habitats from the train
• Data and observation recording from key stops along the track
• Field naturalists from the Thornton W. Burgess Society work with students in each car
• Grade-appropriate observation sheets allow students to record by writing and sketching at each stop
